Happy birthday to Elvis Presley, born on this day in 1935, to Vernon and Gladys Presley in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Elvis was born in this two-room house, which was built by his father, grandfather and uncle. As a child, he lived at various addresses around Tupelo, his parents working several jobs and struggling financially at times.

When Elvis was 11 years old, his mother took him to Tupelo Hardware to get him a bicycle. He was much more interested in a rifle, which Gladys of course didn’t want to buy him.

Instead, they settled on a guitar, which they bought for $7.90. It was his first, and of course set him on course to later become the King of Rock and Roll.
