Happy Thursday everyone and happy Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story release day! I have been so excited ever since it was first announced that Shondaland and Netflix would be making a special spin-off exploring Queen Charlotte.

She is such a powerhouse of a character in the Bridgerton TV show but also she was a powerhouse of a queen, with fascinating interests and ways of doing things that might be quite surprising. I will definitely be watching with bated breath to see the portrayal of this queen, but in the meantime, I am thrilled to share that I have written an article for BBC History Extra exploring the intellectual life of Queen Charlotte to tie in with release day!

    Just watched the first two episodes, and am fascinated to watch the explanation of how the colour-blind casting might be “explained” in the prequel, though one just knows this is the tip of the iceberg in this alternative history timeline! But of course it’s the origins and developments of the characters of Charlotte and Agatha Danbury that help elucidate so much of what happens later that’s the real draw.

    Also wonder how Shondaland will account for George’s illness – porphyria, as once favoured, or bipolar disorder? Looking forward to more in due course!
