England calling

This is a bit of a more personal post, but I wanted to share the news that after almost five years (!!!) living in the US, we’ve moved back to the UK and set up home in the southwest, near Bath. (There will be plenty of Bath content incoming!)

We always knew we wanted to live abroad, and being in the beautiful southern city of Savannah, Georgia was a dream. Whilst we lived there, we managed to tick a huge item off our bucket list, which was to visit every state in America – which we finished just two weeks before we got on a plane back to the UK… please don’t ask me my favourite state though, it’s too hard to choose!

I say I don’t have a favourite, but sunset above New York is one of my best American memories…

We’re going to miss our friends, our home and our city a LOT (and the warm winters!), but we were also so excited to be back in the same country as our family and friends here.

I loved learning about Savannah’s history, and immersing myself in the incredible museums there, and places I was fortunate to visit on our travels. But, at heart, my love is eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British history… and to that end, I have a new job to share.

I’ve just taken up post as Archivist and Curator at Bowood House, in Wiltshire, and am so happy to work with an incredible collection in a unique and beautiful country house, with a fascinating history (you can catch a glimpse of it in the cover photo of this post!). I know I have big shoes to fill, but I am incredibly excited to join the team at Bowood and look after their collection and help share those stories and histories.

Here’s to a new start, and a new decade (for me, I had a big birthday!), and more wonderful histories to research and write about.

  1. Hi Lizzie – have been trying to reach you via email – please connect when you get a chance – so excited you are back in England and will be posting from there! We will miss you in Savannah!

    1. Deb I am so sorry – I just did a search and your email went into a random folder! Expect a reply from me imminently! I will miss you all in Savannah too! Thank you so much – I feel very lucky to be close to Bath, but was not so organised to get to the festival this year!

  2. When we lived in Bristol we went often to Bowood – but honestly it was mostly for the kids and the activities laid on for them, I haven’t strong memories of the house or garden I’m afraid. Must remedy that!

    1. Haha you’d be surprised how many people tell me that – but I can understand it, my memories of visiting places like that near where I grew up are similar!
