Welcome to Nemours Estate, a French neoclassical mansion with very beautiful almost-Versailles landscape gardens in Delaware!

Nemours was built between 1909 and 1910 by Alfred du Pont for his second wife, Alicia. Alicia had a love of all things French, which inspired much of the home.

Alfred’s third wife, Jessie Ball du Pont, loved all things English: so everything in the house is a coming together of French and British interests.

The gardens are just incredible. The Sunken Gardens were designed by Alfred’s only son, an architect, whilst the Temple of Love has a statue of Diana the Huntress looking back towards the house.

Also, the lovely iron gates were made in France, and came from a palace owned by Catherine the Great.

Alfred wanted to build a children’s hospital, and they were the charitable beneficiary of his will. One of the hospitals is located on land of the Nemours Estate.

The house was designed by architects Carrère and Hastings, who also designed the Frick Museum and New York Public Library.
