New Podcast | HistoryExtra, “Jane Austen: Life of the Week”

Hello and happy February! This year is already shaping up to be a true Jane Austen year, and I’ve been celebrating by having a wonderful conversation with Emily Briffett at BBC HistoryExtra about the life of my favourite author/woman in history, which is out today wherever you listen to your podcasts!

I hope that you enjoy if you listen – there is plenty about the different stages of Austen’s life, her writing inspiration and publishing journey, her family and relationships, and how we remember her and why. Plus, I answer the age-old question: which is better, 1995 or 2005’s Pride and Prejudice

  1. I’ve downloaded the link, Lizzie, thanks, and will listen with interest – I’ve nearly finished a second read of Sense and Sensibility so definitely in the mood for it!

    1. Ooh I’ve been thinking of rereading it too! Thank you so much, I hope you enjoy!

  2. Which version would Jane Austen prefer ? Fay Weldon used the author’s own dialogue so skilfully, the actors must present the characters as she envisaged them.

Casting ? Not a minor physical detail, as Darcy makes clear. Elizabeth Garvie’s eyes are exactly as described – a pair of fine eyes. in the face of a pretty woman. .

Laundry, and – sorry – that idiotic wet shirt scene ?

Not in the least sexy, and Darcy’s valet might give notice if expected to remove pond life from fine linen..

    1. I have to admit, Andrew Davies’s version will be forever my favourite, but Elizabeth Garvie is absolutely lovely as Elizabeth Bennet! Fay Weldon did a great job.
