Event | Jane Austen talk at Bowood, 20th & 21st September 2025

, , ,

I am thrilled to invite you to come and join me for a talk about Jane Austen and women’s lives in Georgian England at Bowood House and Gardens, Wiltshire.

Jane Austen’s insights into the lives of women in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are absolutely fascinating. In all honesty, my love for this period stemmed from a childhood spent watching and reading her work (watching first… I’m looking at you Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle).

I’m so pleased that to celebrate Austen’s 250th birthday, we are hosting these talks, plus a trail and afternoon tea, at Bowood, where I am curator and archivist. Bowood has its own special connection to Austen: the 2nd Marquess of Lansdowne was Austen’s landlord in Southampton.

Please come and join us on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September. You can find all the details, plus our other activities available that weekend, on Bowood’s website.

  1. Two problerms, I’m afraid.. Moved from Batheaston to Westmorland years ago, and also, 19th – 23rd, will have visitors. My favourite Elizabeth is still Elizabeth Garvie – must have caught a repeat. If I watched this now, I suspect the lighting would look too bright by current production standards. Watching Persuasion again ( Ciaran Hinds, Amanda Root) brought on a bad case of homesickness for Bath. , –

    1. Two beautiful places to have lived in!! And I LOVE that Persuasion – it is a beautiful display of Bath, in addition to perfect casting! But so glad you even thought you’d like to come!!
